Carter Powley is an active freelance saxophonist from Regina. His repertoire both as a player and writer ranges from jazz to classical, funk and blues. His influences and idols have included Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Monk, Booker Ervin and Eric Dolphy. He has shared the stage with Canadian jazz icon P.J. Perry, guitar virtuoso Jack Semple, long-time jazz bassist Peter Dyksman, pianist Bob Moyer and his famous Big Band, and Canadian Idol runner-up Thereasa Sokyrka. Teachers have ranged from popular jazz pianist Ken Jefferson to classical saxophonist Karen Finnsson and composer Alain Perron. Many have recognized Powley’s gifts both for writing and playing and as a freshman at the U of R, had his works performed by professional orchestras from Regina to Kitchener-Waterloo. Carter has had the opportunity to ‘jam’ and record with musicians from Cuba, Mexico and the U.S. and has developed a taste for the music of South and Latin America from the Bossa Nova, Samba to Modern Tango and reflects this in his playing and composition. Carter is a regular on the Regina music scene, where he continues to work with many great musicians in many roles from Jazz, Big Band, to Blues, Funk, Soul, Electronica, 20th Century Classical, World Music, to studio and street Musician. His sax has been heard as far as Ottawa to Vancouver, and many stops from north to south.
