Press Release The Regina Jazz Society is excited to announce the release of “The Jazz Province: A History of Jazz in Saskatchewan” by prominent Saskatchewan author, playwright and Order of Canada inductee Ken Mitchell.“ The Jazz Province: A History of Jazz in Saskatchewan” is a project which celebrates the rich, vibrant history of Jazz in Saskatchewan as part of the province’s ongoing Centennial Celebrations. The Jazz Province looks at the early history of Jazz music in the province and the multitude of dance halls that sprang up around the province and persevered through some of the province’s toughest times. It follows the tales of homegrown international stars Paul Perry, Chris Gage and Herbie Spanier and many, many more. It also raises new questions about the first possible performance of acclaimed Jazz guitarist Lenny Breau in Regina to an empty room. The Jazz Province also looks at the bright future of Jazz musicians raised among the golden wheat fields of Saskatchewan. Award-winning Saskatchewan designer Catharine Bradbury designed The Jazz Province. Ms. Bradbury has received more than 200 national and international design awards, and has been commissioned for such prestigious work as designing a series of postage stamps for Canada Post. The Jazz Province will be launched on Friday November 25, 2005 at The Wascana Golf and Country Club at 8:00pm. The launch will also feature a performance by Solar Rio and a reading from the book by Mr. Mitchell. At this event The Jazz Province will be available at a special price of $20.05 for soft-cover versions. Mr. Mitchell will also be appearing at the Book & Brier at 2pm Friday November 25, 2005 to sign copies of the book and at McNally Robinson in Saskatoon on Tuesday December 6, 2005. Copies of “The Jazz Province: A History of Jazz in Saskatchewan” will be available at select retailers throughout the province (see below) and online through the Regina Jazz Society’s Web site. The retail price of the book will be $25 for soft-cover and $45 for hard cover. For more information on how to purchase a copy, please visit http://reginajazz.ca. The Regina Jazz Society was established in 1977 to encourage, promote and provide a forum for the appreciation of Jazz music for enthusiasts of all ages. The Regina Jazz Society would like to thank the Department of Canadian Heritage, SaskCulture’s Culture Initiatives Fund, the City of Regina’s Civic Arts Funding Program, and various sponsors for their support of this project.
